Here are some of the best family friendly walking and hiking trails around the UK from bonnie Scotland to the sunny South Coast
🌄 Northern England
Mam Tor, Peak District, Derbyshire
A big favourite for families Mam Tor also known as the Shivering Mountain gives you proper mountain vibes without the hard work. It’s only a 20 to 30 minute walk from the car park to the top and the views are absolutely unreal. The kids will feel like mini adventurers conquering their first peak
Malham Cove, Yorkshire Dales
Harry Potter fans listen up Malham Cove starred in the films. The walk to the base is nice and flat perfect for all ages. Got older kids Climb the steps to the top for a cracking view of the Dales and maybe grab a family selfie while you’re up there
Catbells, Lake District
One of the most popular family walks in the Lakes and for good reason. It looks like a proper mountain but the route is short sweet and super scenic. There’s a bit of a climb at the start but it’s nothing a few snacks won’t sort out. Plus you can hop on the Keswick Launch boat across the lake to get there which makes it even more fun
🏴 Scotland
Loch an Eilein, Cairngorms National Park
Fancy something peaceful and postcard pretty This walk circles a lovely loch surrounded by forest with a castle ruin plonked on an island in the middle very fairy tale. It’s totally buggy friendly and if you're lucky you might even spot a red squirrel
Queen’s View and Allean Forest, Pitlochry
A gentle wander with a proper wow moment. The trail leads through lovely woodland and ends with a stunning view over Loch Tummel. It’s called Queen’s View for a reason. Great for picnics photos and letting the kids stretch their legs
🏞️ Midlands and Wales
Carding Mill Valley to Lightspout Waterfall, Shropshire Hills
A fab one for little explorers. Grab a treat from the café to start then follow the trail through the valley up to a cute little waterfall. It’s easy enough for toddlers but still feels like a proper outdoor adventure
Elidir Trail to Sgwd yr Eira Waterfall, Brecon Beacons
Got slightly older kids who love a challenge This walk is around four miles weaving through woodland and ending at a magical waterfall you can actually walk behind. Yep behind it. Feels like stepping into a storybook
🌳 Southern England
Box Hill Natural Play Trail, Surrey
Not just a walk this one’s a full on adventure playground. There are logs to clamber over trees to balance on and surprise play areas hidden along the way. It’s ideal for smaller children and there’s a café nearby for a well earned cuppa and cake after
Fowey Hall Walk, Cornwall
Part of the South West Coast Path but don’t panic this bit is short and sweet. You’ll get stunning coastal views take a mini boat ride across the estuary the kids will love it and round it all off with an ice cream. What more could you want on a sunny day
