Half Term Halloween Crafts - On the Cheap
Here at Ashleigh Money Saver we know the importance of getting the most bang for your buck. Whether it's your kids, grandkids, nieces, nephews or friends we know all about balancing entertainment with screen time.
We have therefore put together a range of crafts to keep everyone entertained without breaking the bank!
Creepy Crawly Paper Plate Spiders
What you'll need:
- Paper plates
- Black paint or markers
- Pipe cleaners
- Googly eyes
- Glue or tape
How to make:
Paint your plate black and let it dry. Poke four holes on each side, thread in pipe cleaners for legs, then stick on googly eyes. Hang from doorframes or windows for a spooky effect!
Money saver tip: Paper plates and pipe cleaners are often cheapest in pound shops or supermarket seasonal aisles.

2. Floating Ghost Lanterns
What you need:
- Clean empty jam jars
- White tissue paper, kitchen roll or white paint
- PVA glue (or watered-down craft glue)
- Black marker/googly eyes
How to make:
Brush glue over the jar, stick on tissue paper until covered, then draw ghostly faces with your marker once dry. Pop in battery tea lights for an eerie glow. Or paint the jar white, add some googly eyes and you are good to go!
Money saver tip: Raid your cupboards — if you’re anything like me, there will be some out-of-date tins/jars ready to use.

3. Witchy Potion Bottles
What you need:
- Empty bottles (glass or plastic)
- Food colouring
- Glitter, sequins, or fake spiders
- Labels or brown paper
How to make:
Fill bottles with water, add food colouring and glitter, and seal tightly. Write spooky names on labels — “Bat Wings”, “Zombie Tears” — and display on a shelf for Halloween ambience.

4. Bat Window Silhouettes
What you need:
- Black card or thick paper
- Scissors
- White chalk or pencil
How to make:
Draw simple bat outlines and cut them out. Stick to windows with blu tack for an instant Halloween upgrade.
Money saver tip: Download free bat templates online to get perfectly shaped wings without fuss.

Half Term Happiness on a Budget
Halloween crafting doesn’t need to cost the earth. Pound shops, supermarkets, and online bargains can keep your craft box stocked for less. Save leftover materials for next year or swap with friends to cut costs further.
Quick Tips for Crafting Success
- Set up a “spooky station”: Cover the table with newspaper for easy cleanup.
